Last.fm's API is the original scrobbling and music-recommendation service, exposing a listener's scrobble history, global/user top charts, and artist/track/album metadata built from that listening data. Read-only calls need only a free API key with no OAuth handshake, while a lightweight token/session exchange authenticates the write-scrobble methods; Last.fm asks that commercial or academic users contact them before building on top of it. Responses are available as either REST-style JSON or the legacy XML format.
