Nationalize.io

Verified Jul 2026

Nationalize.io, the third API from Demografix ApS alongside Agify and Genderize, returns a ranked list of likely countries of origin (with probability scores) for a given first name, drawn from worldwide naming statistics, and supports batching up to 10 names per call. It requires no key for its free tier of 2,500 names a month, with paid plans scaling to 25 million requests a month.

Nationalize.io returns a ranked list of likely countries for a first name, drawn from worldwide naming statistics. Each candidate country gets a probability score. You can batch up to 100 names in one request. Keyless calls work for a quick test. For the free tier of 2,500 names a month, register for a free API key.

Auth quickstart

  1. No API key required for a quick test. Keyless requests are public.
  2. For more than a few calls, register at nationalize.io for a free key. The same key works on Genderize, Agify, and Nationalize.

Rate limit

2,500 names/month (Free tier) -- per nationalize.io/documentation's pricing table; a live probe also showed a 25-per-window x-rate-limit-limit header on top of the monthly cap.

Gotchas & limits

  • country always returns up to five candidates, ordered by descending probability, and is an empty array rather than an error when no prediction can be made
  • Batch lookups use repeated name[] params (e.g. ?name[]=nguyen&name[]=schmidt&name[]=garcia), up to 100 names per request, and return a JSON array instead of a single object
  • Keyless calls carry x-rate-limit-limit: 25 with a multi-hour reset, per a live response header. The documented free tier of 2,500 names a month needs a free account key
